Vernon White MSM was Chief of Police for Durham Region and then for the City of Ottawa, and rose to Assistant Commissioner in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police before that. He sat in the Senate of Canada from 2012 to October 2022. He now runs a consultancy advising governments, and holds adjunct professorships in Canada, Australia and Finland.
Vernon joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in 1982 and rose to Assistant Commissioner. During his tenure with the RCMP he served as the Commanding Officer for the Nunavut Territory and later managed a $500 million budget as the Assistant Chief Human Resources Officer. His leadership extended to municipal policing, where he served as Chief of Police for both the Durham Region and the City of Ottawa, overseeing thousands of staff and providing public safety for populations exceeding one million inhabitants.
Vernon was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 2012 and served until October 2022. Throughout his career he has maintained a strong commitment to academia and international relations, serving as an International Fellow for the Australian Strategic Policy Institute and as an adjunct professor for universities across Canada, Australia and Finland. His education includes a Doctor of Leadership, a Master of Arts in Conflict Analysis and Management, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology.
Vernon now operates as a CEO and Managing Director in private consulting, continuing to provide high-level expertise to government bodies. Recent engagements include after-action reviews for Global Affairs Canada, reviewing provincial and municipal policing in British Columbia, and advising the City of Ottawa on law enforcement and addiction challenges. His public service has been recognised with the Meritorious Service Medal, three Queen's Jubilee Medals and the King's Coronation Medal in 2025.
