Geoffrey Smith
Geoff is a former senior Tasmania Police Commander and security specialist with over 40 years of policing experience. He retired as the Commander in charge of Tasmania Police’s Counter-Terrorism Command in 2019.
Between 2012 and 2019, he was the Australia New Zealand Counter-Terrorism Committee’s Senior Adviser to the Deputy Commissioner of Tasmania Police. During this period, Geoff commanded all the counter-terrorism operational response capabilities for the state and developed the protective security advisory role within Tasmania Police.
Geoff was a principal author of Australia’s Strategy for Protecting Crowded Places from Terrorism and led national initiatives in reviewing the private security industry and enhancing the national police protective security capability.
Geoff has extensive experience working across government at an executive level, was a member of the Tasmanian State Emergency Management Committee and Manager of the State Crisis Centre. He was previously the Commander responsible for the Education and Training portfolio within Tasmania Police.
Geoff’s expertise covers police education, public safety, security risk management and policy development. He has presented extensively overseas and nationally on the protection of crowded places.
Geoff holds a Bachelor in Policing, a Diploma in Security Risk Management and is a Churchill Fellow.
Since 2018, Geoff has been a managing partner of the risk advisory practice Alexander James and Partners.
